The Japanese manufacturer is introducing the redesigned version of its well-known pickup truck which will go on sale as the 2018 Toyota Tundra. This model has been presented at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show and will hit the market with mild but noticeable changes. What is the most important change or to say novelty, is the introduction of the new TRD Toyota Racing Development) Sport trim. This trim will add some nice black details, larger 20-inch wheels and more power under the hood.
On the other hand, the upcoming Tundra will arrive with minor but important upgrades. Those will include more standard safety systems, some changes in exterior styling, mostly on the front fascia and deletion of the regular cab model. So, the new Toyota will be available in SR, SR5, Limited, 1794 Edition, Platinum and TRD Sport trim levels. GMS Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Nissan Titan, Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500 will be its main competitors.
2018 Toyota Tundra powertrain and performance
The 2018 Toyota Tundra will be powered with two engines depending on a trim level. So, the base SR and SR5 will receive a 4.6-liter V-8 unit which will be able to develop 310 horses and 327 pound-feet of torque. The next option will be a 5.7-liter V-8 engine. This one will be able to generate 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Both engines will pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The rear-wheel drive will be standard while the all-wheel drive configuration will be in offer as well.
As for the fuel economy, the new Tundra is not so efficient vehicle. With FWD, the base engine gets 15/19/16 mpg while with AWD is shows 14/18/16 mpg. The optional 5.7-liter is rated at 13/18/15 mpg while with all-wheel drive it gets 13/17/15 mpg.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to the exterior, the 2018 Toyota Tundra will generally keep the same look of the current model. However, the car maker has slightly restyled the front end with new honey-comb grille design and revised headlamps with daytime running lights. They will also give it more aggressive appearance. The new TRD Sport trim will add body color mirrors, mesh grille, LED headlights in order to make it look different than the rest of the lineup. The new Tundra will ride on standard 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires while the top trims will add 20-inch silver aluminum wheels.
The 2018 Toyota Tundra is able to welcome up to five passengers in comfortable and supportive seats, especially the front ones. The seats are covered with quality brown leather upholstery. It is no longer available with regular cab, but with extended and crew cab versions. The dashboard is wide and features a 6.1-inch touchscreen with infotainment system, USB and Bluetooth. However, the higher trims will receive a larger 7.0-inch display.
The base trims will arrive with air conditioning, power windows and locks, satellite radio, HD radio, navigation etc. The top trims will add sunroof, heated and cooled seats, woodgrain trim, JBL speakers and so on. As for the safety, the standard equipment will include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, Star Safety System, forward collision warning etc.
Release date and price
The new 2018 Toyota Tundra is already available on markets. As for the price, it starts at around $32,000 and it will go up to $47,000.
