However, the 2021 model year should be fully overhauled, it will ride on the new platform and we can expect a new engine as well.
Engine and performance of the 2020 Toyota GT86
The 2020 Toyota GT86 will return with the same unit as the 2019 model year. And there is one single option but two transmissions available. It is a 2.0-liter flat-4 unit. Connected to 6-speed manual transmission, this engine can produce 205 horses and 156 lb-ft of torque. With 6-speed automatic gearbox, it is able to deliver 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, with manual transmission, this engine is rated at 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. The model with an automatic gearbox will get 24 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined.
On the other hand, according to some news, the 2021 model year will get a new engine. And it is going to be a 2.4-liter gasoline unit which is also found in the Subaru Ascent. This engine is able to make 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.
The exterior and interior design of the 2020 Toyota GT86
The 2020 Toyota GT86 will come with the same exterior design as the current model. And for a complete makeover including a new platform, we will have to wait for the 2021 model year. So, the GT86 is a sports car recognizable for its long hood, angular front fascia, sloping roofline, and it features the low and wide stance. There is also the new TRD Special Edition which will get red and yellow graphics in the exterior design while inside, it will get a two-tone color combination and a red leather steering wheel.
Moving to the interior, the 2020 Toyota GT86 is simple and functional and there are faux fiber and metallic trim. The two-tone red and black interior is also available. It comes with two rows of seats and can place four passengers. The front seats are cozy and bolstered while the rear seats are a bit tight. So, technically it is the best for two.
The standard equipment includes automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, manually adjustable seats, keyless entry, LED taillights, and daytime running lights, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and fold-flat rear seats. A rearview camera, USB, Bluetooth, and a 7.0-inch Pioneer touchscreen for the infotainment system are also standard. The GT 86 will add upgraded upholstery, a rear spoiler, a 4.2-inch information display in the gauge cluster, and dual-zone climate control. The TRD Special Edition package will add 18-inch wheels, black and red interior, and so on.
Release date and price
The 2020 Toyota GT86 should arrive sometime during 2019. The price will stay close to the current model which starts at around $26,500.
